Jhon Duran is expected to remain on the bench when Aston Villa face Arsenal in the Premier League this Saturday. The Colombian striker made his return to Villa’s squad in Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Everton following a three-match suspension but was not included in the starting lineup by Unai Emery.
Emery Sticks with Watkins After Duran’s Suspension
Duran’s suspension stemmed from a red card he received in the 3-0 defeat against Newcastle United on 26 December. The incident at St. James’ Park raised concerns over the 19-year-old’s temperament, with the possibility of further punishment looming.
Despite his availability, Emery opted to bench Duran and keep faith in Ollie Watkins, who repaid the manager’s trust by scoring the decisive goal at Goodison Park.
Former Aston Villa scout Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Villa News, believes Emery’s decision was intentional and aimed at sending a message to Duran.
“Villa won and Watkins scored the goal,” King said. “Therefore, I think the writing is on the wall—Watkins will start against Arsenal. But I also believe Emery’s decision to bench Duran against Everton was a way of addressing his behavior after the red card against Newcastle.
“I think Emery has had a stern conversation with Duran about the incident, but I fully expect him to feature off the bench against Arsenal.”
Emery’s Striker Dilemma
As Villa prepare to face Arsenal at the Emirates on 18 January, the focus shifts to Emery’s choice between Watkins and Duran. While most managers would welcome the challenge of having two high-quality strikers, reports of friction between the pair suggest the situation may not be entirely straightforward.
Both Watkins and Duran possess the talent to start regularly, but Emery seems to favor a system that accommodates only one striker. Unless Emery devises a strategy to utilize both players simultaneously, speculation about one of them seeking an exit may intensify.
Potential Rotation or Long-Term Decisions?
With the January transfer window still open, the dynamic between Watkins and Duran could have broader implications for Aston Villa’s season. For now, it seems likely that Watkins will retain his starting role against Arsenal, while Duran continues to be an impact option from the bench—a role that may shape his future at the club.
The match against Arsenal will provide a clearer picture of Emery’s plans and his ability to manage two strikers eager to make their mark.
